Cold War Structural Failures of the B-47 Stratojet
By the mid-1950s, the U.S. Air Force faced a growing crisis: the B-47 Stratojet, America’s first swept-wing nuclear bomber, was suffering catastrophic structural failures. Wing spars, longerons, and fuselage frames were cracking under stress loads far beyond what had been anticipated during early design and testing.
In 1957 alone, 27 B-47s were lost in accidents. By 1958, that number rose to 31. Many of these losses involved sudden in-flight breakups — violent, explosive failures that left little chance for crew survival.
The project’s name came from the shape of the reinforcement sleeves installed inside the fuselage. These cylindrical inserts resembled old-style glass milk bottles, and were designed to strengthen critical structural points prone to fatigue cracking.
Over 1,600 aircraft received Milk Bottle reinforcements between 1958 and 1959, including B-47s, KC-97 tankers, and other airframes sharing similar structural geometry.
The mid-air explosion of B-47E 52-0470 over Collins, New York on April 10, 1958 became one of the defining incidents that accelerated the Milk Bottle program. The violent breakup — witnessed by dozens of residents — matched the pattern of other structural failures occurring during high-stress maneuvers.
Newly released FOIA documents confirm that the Collins crash was directly studied as part of the Milk Bottle investigation, contributing to the reinforcement requirements later applied fleet-wide.
